Gemini CLI 0.64.0 makes file edits atomic, keeps its state file recoverable after a crash and resolves @file:line references, with fixes for Ctrl+C aborts, headless folder trust and Windows input. Google’s stable changelog dates the release October 13, 2026, and the @google/gemini-cli package was published to npm at 20:48 UTC that day, where it now carries the latest tag (npm).

From the release notes and the changelog:

  • Atomic file edits. The edit and write-file tools now serialize operations on the same path and write through a temporary file that is renamed into place. The pull request says parallel tool calls on one file, notably from parallel subagents, could otherwise lose updates (#29499).
  • Recoverable CLI state. ~/.gemini/state.json is written atomically, the previous copy is kept as state.json.bak, and a corrupt file is preserved as state.json.corrupt while the CLI restores from the backup (#29558).
  • Lighter chat recording. Session recording switches to append-only delta patches with a bounded history window, to cut memory and disk use in long sessions (#29568).
  • @file:line references. A reference such as @file:10, @file:10-20 or @file#L10-L25 now resolves to the file itself instead of hanging or failing, and still respects .gitignore and .geminiignore (#29581).

Fixes worth knowing about

  • Headless folder trust. In headless mode the CLI now passes on the folder’s real trust state; before, it reported an untrusted folder as trusted to the rest of the app (#29528).
  • Ctrl+C emergency aborts reach the cancellation handler during active operations (#29586), and an @ inside code no longer causes a CPU hang or swallows quotes (#29557).
  • Terminal UI. Enter and Spacebar reliably confirm selection lists, and scroll position is preserved (#29502, #29520).
  • Windows. ConPTY forwards the IME cursor position, and extension updates retry directory removal on file-locking errors (#29560, #29540).
  • ACP and A2A. The Agent Client Protocol bridge emits usage_update notifications and resolves sessions by exact ID, and the A2A server migrates V1 settings to V2 (#29549, #29580, #29450).
  • The release also carries the 0.64.0-preview.1 patch, which cuts false positives on untrusted command flags and compound loops (#29696).

How to update

The changelog gives this command for the latest stable version:

npm install -g @google/gemini-cli

The same day Google also published 0.65.0-preview.0, which among other changes enforces read-only workspace settings in untrusted folders and adds custom OTLP headers for telemetry. The preview changelog installs it with:

npm install -g @google/gemini-cli@preview
