Postman MCP Server

Connects agents to Postman workspaces, collections, specs and environments, and generates API client code.

Install

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http postman https://mcp.postman.com/minimal

With an API key instead of OAuth:

claude mcp add --transport http postman https://mcp.postman.com/minimal --header "Authorization: Bearer <POSTMAN_API_KEY>"

Codex CLI

codex mcp add postman --url https://mcp.postman.com/minimal

Cursor

        "postman": {
            "url": "https://mcp.postman.com/minimal"
        }
    }
}

VS Code

            "url": "https://mcp.postman.com/minimal"
        }
    }
}

GitHub Copilot CLI

copilot mcp add --transport http postman https://mcp.postman.com/minimal

Local server

(from the README; set POSTMAN_API_KEY as an environment variable, add --code or --full for those modes)

npx @postman/postman-mcp-server

Commands and configuration as given in Postman’s documentation (remote server setup). These use the Minimal configuration with OAuth; replace placeholders such as <POSTMAN_API_KEY> with your own values.

Postman MCP Server is Postman’s official server for its workspaces, collections, specs and environments.

The Postman MCP server connects coding agents to Postman workspaces, collections, specifications and environments. Postman maintains it under the Apache-2.0 license. It runs as a remote server over streamable HTTP at https://mcp.postman.com, which supports OAuth on the US endpoint, or locally over stdio with npx @postman/postman-mcp-server and a Postman API key (README).

It ships four tool configurations: Minimal (the default, essential tools for single collections, workspaces or environments), Code (client code generation from API definitions), Full (all Postman API tools, 100+) and Learn (search of the Postman docs). On the remote server you pick one by path: /minimal, /code, /mcp for Full, or /learn (remote setup). The README notes that the remote server has no network access to your workstation, so testing a local API needs the local server.

Questions

Is the Postman MCP server remote or local?
Both. Postman hosts a remote server over streamable HTTP, and the @postman/postman-mcp-server npm package runs it locally over stdio.
Does the Postman MCP server need an API key?
Not on the US remote server, which supports OAuth. The EU remote server and the local server accept only a Postman API key.
Which tool configuration should I use?
Minimal is the default for basic edits, Code generates client code from API definitions, Full exposes all Postman API tools (100+), and Learn searches the Postman docs.
Which clients does Postman document setup for?
Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Antigravity CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Kiro and Docker for the local server.
