How much Claude Code costs depends on your plan, since every paid Claude plan includes it: Pro is $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually), Max is $100 (5x) or $200 (20x) a month, Team seats are $20 or $100 per seat a month billed annually, and Enterprise is $20 per seat a month plus usage at API rates (Claude pricing). You can also pay per token through a Claude Console account instead; the Free plan does not include Claude Code.

Applies to: Claude Code with Claude Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise and Console (API) accounts, per claude.com/pricing and the Anthropic Help Center as of October 2, 2026. Last checked: October 2, 2026.

Notes from the same pages:

  • Max is billed monthly only, per the Max Help Center article. Its prices “are for web subscriptions only. Mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform.”
  • Team plans “require a minimum of two members” and support up to 150 seats. Standard and Premium seats can be mixed in one organization (What is the Team plan?).
  • Enterprise “is billed annually and includes everything in Team plus advanced security and admin controls, including SCIM, audit logs, custom data retention, and role-based access” (Claude pricing FAQ).

Is Claude Code included in Pro?

Yes. The pricing page answers the question directly: “Claude Code is included in all paid plans.” Its plan comparison table marks Claude Code “No” for Free and “Yes” for Pro, Max 5x, Max 20x, Team and both Enterprise options. The Claude Code setup docs put it the other way round: “Claude Code requires a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or Console account. The free Claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access.”

How Claude Code usage is shared with Claude chat

There is no separate Claude Code allowance on subscription plans. From the pricing FAQ: “It shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan, so your work in the terminal and your chats draw from one pool.” The Help Center article for Pro and Max adds that IDE use counts too: “IDE usage counts toward the same usage limits shared across Claude and Claude Code.”

How the limits work, per Anthropic:

Limit Anthropic’s description Source
Session “Every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window” Claude pricing FAQ
Weekly “Paid plans add weekly limits on top.” On Max and Team, the weekly limit “resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account” Claude pricing FAQ, Max, Team
Message count “How much you can do depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model you choose, and the features you use, so there’s no fixed message count” Claude pricing FAQ
Team seats “Usage limits on Team plans are per-member, rather than applied to the team as a whole” Team

Anthropic also says it “may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion” (Claude pricing FAQ). Your next reset time is shown in Settings > Usage.

Model access by plan

From the pricing page comparison table:

Model Free Pro Max 5x / 20x Team Enterprise
Fable No Usage credits “50% of weekly limits” “50% of weekly limits” on premium seats Yes
Opus No Yes Yes Yes Yes
Sonnet Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Haiku Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

Claude Code on pay-as-you-go API billing

If you sign in with a Claude Console account instead of a subscription, Claude Code bills per token. The cost management docs say: “Claude Code charges by API token consumption.” Anthropic’s own figure for enterprise deployments: “the average cost is around $13 per developer per active day and $150-250 per developer per month, with costs remaining below $30 per active day for 90% of users” (Manage costs effectively). Per-token prices for each model are on Anthropic’s API pricing page.

Warning

Anthropic’s Help Center says: “If you have an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set on your system, Claude Code will use this API key for authentication instead of your Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plans), resulting in API usage charges rather than using your subscription’s included usage.” Unset the variable if you mean to use your plan.

What happens when you hit the limit

The pricing FAQ lists three options: “When you reach a limit, you can wait for it to reset, move to a higher plan, or, on paid plans, turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates.” The Pro and Max Help Center article gives the same choices per plan:

Plan Options Anthropic lists
Pro Upgrade to Max 5x; enable usage credits; switch to a Claude Console account and buy API usage credits; wait for the reset
Max 5x Upgrade to Max 20x; enable usage credits; switch to a Console account; wait for the reset
Max 20x Enable usage credits; switch to a Console account; wait for the reset
Team The organization can enable usage credits for members on all seat types (Team)

Keep Claude Code inside your plan

The Help Center lists these steps to stay within a Pro or Max allocation:

  1. Decline the API credit option when Claude Code offers it.
  2. Let your usage period reset before continuing.
  3. Monitor your remaining allocation with /status.

To stop the API credit option from appearing at all, it says to log out and log back in with only your plan credentials:

claude logout
claude login

Inside a session, /usage shows plan usage bars and, while usage credits are on, a usage-credits row with your spend for the current month (Manage costs effectively).

How to start using Claude Code on your plan

  1. Subscribe to a paid plan at claude.ai/upgrade, or create a Console account for API billing (Help Center).

  2. Install Claude Code. The setup docs list the native installer as recommended for macOS, Linux and WSL:

    curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash

    Windows PowerShell:

    irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex

  3. Open a terminal in your project and run claude, then follow the browser prompts to log in with the same credentials you use for Claude.

  4. If you were logged in with a Console account and want your subscription instead, run /login inside Claude Code to switch (Help Center).
