Codex 0.160.0 lets you page through older tasks in the agent command center, start sessions outside a project, and give Guardian reviews more context, with fixes for reconnects, the Windows sandbox and SQLite stalls. OpenAI published the release on GitHub on October 1, 2026 at 20:19 UTC, and the npm package followed at 20:26 UTC, where it now carries the latest tag (npm).

New in 0.160.0
From the release notes:
- Older tasks in the agent command center. A keyboard-accessible “Show more” action loads earlier tasks (#49106).
- Sessions outside a project. You can start a session with workspace defaults when policy permits, and saved permissions come back when you resume (#49160).
- More context for Guardian reviews. Opt-in capabilities let a Guardian review retrieve earlier user instructions and include context from agent handoffs (#49036, #49057).
- Middle-click paste on Linux. In fullscreen mode on supported local X11 terminals, you can select transcript text and paste it with middle-click (#49112).
Fixes worth knowing about
- Queued messages that were not sent resume after a reconnect once uncertain submissions are resolved, so they are not sent twice (#49105).
- The terminal UI keeps the server’s provider, reasoning-summary and verbosity settings, and resume and fork history show the right sessions (#49144, #49161, #49171).
- Windows: PowerShell fallbacks in the sandbox, permission repairs on long paths, and no more stray console windows from background helpers (#49019, #49058, #49098, #49164, #49386).
- Subagents keep environments that are still starting and receive their configuration or preparation failure (#49075).
- SQLite no longer stalls during connection setup and logging, and initialization errors are reported instead of showing up as timeouts (#49032, #49102).
- An explicit provider model catalog no longer picks up unsupported bundled models or reuses stale entries after a failed refresh (#49135).
Docs and housekeeping
The release clarifies how provider credentials use the configured storage backend and how env_key names the environment variable that holds the API key (#49118). Plugin loading now caches parsed manifests and reuses HTTP connections for remote plugin requests, and unused space in the log database is reclaimed in the background (#49099, #49100, #49069).
