Remotion and Claude Code work together through Remotion’s own Agent Skills and a Claude Code plugin: you create a Remotion project, install the skills, start the preview and then prompt Claude Code for the video, following Remotion’s coding agents guide. This page covers both install routes, what each skill does and the license terms to check first.

Applies to: Remotion Agent Skills and the Remotion Claude Code plugin, per Remotion’s documentation. Last checked: October 23, 2026.

What you need first

Remotion’s prerequisites are a coding agent and Node.js. Remotion names Claude Code, Codex, Kimi Code and OpenCode as agents it works with, and notes that most coding agents require a paid subscription. For Claude Code plan prices, see the plans tracker.

Set up a project with the skills

These are Remotion’s steps, in order. Create a project from the Blank template:

npx create-video --yes --blank my-video

Go into the directory it created:

cd my-video

Install the Remotion Agent Skills:

npx remotion skills add

Start the preview:

npm run dev

Then open a separate terminal window and start Claude Code in the same project:

cd my-video
claude # or: codex / kimi / opencode

From there you describe the video in a prompt. Remotion’s guide pairs these steps with a five-minute video tutorial.

Where the skills land

The npx remotion skills reference says skills install from remotion-dev/skills into the project’s .agents/skills directory, and Claude Code compatibility comes from symlinking .claude/skills to .agents/skills. That matches Claude Code’s project skill location, .claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md, which loads in sessions in that repository (Anthropic). The Claude Code skills guide explains how project skills load and how to invoke them.

To update installed skills later:

npx remotion skills update

Remotion’s Agent Skills page lists two other ways to get them: the general installer, and the prompt to add skills when you create a project with Bun.

npx skills add remotion-dev/skills
bun create video

The skill sources are in the Remotion repository.

The Remotion skills and what each covers

From Remotion’s skills list:

Skill What Remotion says it covers
/remotion-best-practices Includes all the other skills; use it when unsure which one fits
/remotion-create Create a new Remotion project or composition
/remotion-markup Writing Remotion React markup: compositions, animations, layout, typography, media, effects, audio, fonts, timing
/remotion-studio Launch the Studio to preview the video
/remotion-render Render a video or a still
/remotion-maps Map animations, routes and markers, Mapbox, MapLibre, MapTiler, GeoJSON, CesiumJS flyovers
/remotion-captions Captions and subtitles
/remotion-saas Architecture for Remotion-powered apps and product integrations
/remotion-interactivity Making Remotion code editable in Studio
/remotion-docs Search Remotion’s docs and fetch a page as Markdown
/remotion-upgrade Upgrade Remotion, related packages and installed skills
/remotion-multimedia Browser-based multimedia handling with Mediabunny

One of Remotion’s suggested prompts for the create skill:

/remotion-create Make a promo video for a record store

The Remotion skills listing in our directory keeps the source link and license next to other skill collections.

Install the Remotion plugin instead

Remotion also maintains a Claude Code plugin that includes the same Agent Skills. From the terminal, add Remotion’s marketplace and install the plugin:

claude plugin marketplace add remotion-dev/claude-code-plugin
claude plugin install remotion@remotion

Restart Claude Code after installing. In the Claude desktop app, Remotion’s steps are: select Code, open Customize in the sidebar, then Plugins → Discover, search for remotion and click Add next to the plugin from remotion-dev/claude-code-plugin.

Plugin skills are namespaced, so the plugin’s create skill is called like this, in a new session in the folder where the video should go:

/remotion:remotion-create Make a promo video for a record store

Anthropic’s plugin docs note that a plugin can run hooks and MCP servers, so read the plugin’s details pane before you install (Anthropic; see also plugin security and trust). The Claude skills marketplace guide covers /plugin and marketplaces in more detail.

Check the Remotion license before commercial work

Remotion is not under a standard open-source license. Its license file grants a free license, including commercial video creation, to:

  • individuals
  • for-profit organizations with up to 3 employees
  • non-profit or not-for-profit organizations
  • anyone evaluating whether Remotion fits, before using it commercially

Other for-profit organizations need a company license. Prices are on Remotion’s License & Pricing page. The license file also notes that the terms change slightly in Remotion 5.0.

Point Claude Code at Remotion’s docs

Remotion says its docs are built for agents: add .md to any doc URL for raw Markdown, and the site returns Markdown when a request’s Accept header asks for text/markdown. Remotion says pasting a doc link into Claude Code or another agent fetches the Markdown version. The /remotion-docs skill searches the same documentation.
